It’s hard to argue against how good 2017 was for video games. There was something for everybody, from breakout indie titles to blockbuster shooters. We had open world games out the butt, and linear, story-based games to fall back on when we needed some stability in life. So far, 2018 is shaping up to be just as good, if not better. Here are the most anticipated video games of 2018.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Nothing gets the gaming world in a tizzy more than a new game from Rockstar. The Grand Theft Auto series has set bar in terms of quality and scope that is rivaled by few, if any. Add that fans have been waiting for a sequel to Red Dead Redemption for years now, and Red Dead Redemption 2 might just be the most anticipated of all the games set to release in 2018. We don’t know exactly when it will drop, but the rumor is that it will be Friday, June 8, 2018.
God of War
It may be called God of War, but it’s commonly referred to as God of War 4. Lifetime fans and owners of PlayStation hardware will be very familiar with this series, but it’s been almost eight years since the last installment. That will change in 2018, when God of War releases exclusively for the PlayStation 4. It will be a single-player adventure game like so many other Sony exclusives, and it figures to be an early contender on most Game of the Year lists. No specific release date has been confirmed.
A Way Out
As a gamer who long ago left his PvP desires behind, any game that offers cooperative play catches my attention. A Way Out not only offers co-op, but it demands it. There is no single player mode offered in this action-adventure game that focuses on Lee and Vincent, two convicted criminals that must break out of prison and evade the authorities once they do. You can find it on the PS4, Xbox One and PC on Friday, March 23, 2018.
I’m as big a Destiny 2 player as there is, but Bungie is currently under siege for many of their choices, and rightfully so. This has me in the market for a new multiplayer role-playing game, and Anthem could hit all the right points. However, you must approach with caution. We’ve hit a time of loot box madness, and EA is one of the worst offenders. I’ll be watching closely to see how egregious the microtransactions are before I get too excited. Anthem will be out sometime in 2018.
Detroit: Become Human
I’ve been waiting for Detroit: Become Human for a long time. It’s from the makers of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, which I think are two of the best PlayStation exclusives in recent years. Detroit: Become Human looks to be even better, if that’s possible. If you don’t believe me, watch the gameplay from PSX 2017, then try and disagree. Detroit: Become Human will be available in 2018. We don’t know exactly when just yet, but regardless it is one of the most anticipated games of the year.
Days Gone is an action-adventure survival horror game from SIE Bend Studio. You probably don’t know that name, but they are responsible for a video game series folks my age will recognize; Syphon Filter. It’s another PS4 exclusive, and it looks like a cross between The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy. I feel that the zombie genre might be running out of steam, but I’ll take a great game in any form. This looks to be a great game. Expect it at some point during 2018, but we don’t know exactly when.
Far Cry 5
Ubisoft went through a phase where they were cranking out games as quickly as a burger joint would serve bad hamburgers. To be fair, the games weren’t very good, either. That might be changing. Assassins Creed: Origins was good, and so was Ghost Recon Wildlands. It looks like slowing down a bit might have been a smart move for Ubisoft. Far Cry 5 will drop on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, but most anticipated doesn’t mean it will be good. Proceed with caution.
Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World figures to be the first big game of the year. Hard to say if it will be a good game, but it’s going to be massively popular, that’s for sure. Monster Hunter: World will release on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, and TL;DR Games will be all over it. However, PC players should be aware that they won’t get their hands on it until at least Q3 2018, while console owners will have Monster Hunter: World in their libraries on Friday, January 26, 2018.
Do you realize that the Metro franchise has been around only since the release of God of War III? That’s right, Metro isn’t really that old, but it’s a series that has built up a huge base of fans. Metro Exodus looks incredible in the trailers that we’ve seen, and it’s one of the rare blockbuster games that will be hitting all platforms at the same time. We don’t know when that is, but Metro Exodus will be out on PS4, Xbox One and PC at some point in 2018.
Fans of the Darksiders series have been left out in the cold since 2012. They have spent years speculating about a Darksiders III, left with the most painful of all the emotions; hope. Luckily, a leak on Amazon let the cat out of the bag, and THQ Nordic was forced to confirm that Darksiders III was in development by Gunfire Games. We don’t have much in terms of information, other than the speculation that we’ll see Darksiders III released at some point in 2018.
While there are many more games anticipated for release in 2018, 10 feels like a good number to start with. I’ll be sure to add to it periodically but, for now, those are my most anticipated video games of 2018.
