It’s been a good year for video games. The introduction of the Nintendo Switch opened new possibilities when it comes to high-end gaming. You can play games at home and on the big television, or you can take them with you on the road and keep going. The Nintendo Switch has made it all possible, and developers are busy porting their most popular titles from the past few years to Nintendo’s new console. All of this has led us to an extensive list of the best Nintendo Switch games of 2017.
Best Nintendo Switch Games of 2017
For this list, I’ll be going over some of the more popular titles on Nintendo Switch. Some of these games came out on other platforms before 2017, but they all made their debut on the Nintendo Switch this year. Of course they did. The Nintendo Switch just came out this year.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the launch title for the Nintendo Switch. In fact, it is likely found in quite a few Nintendo Switch bundles over the holiday season. It’s an open world game that, by all accounts, is a masterpiece. If you’re planning to snag a Nintendo Switch for yourself or someone on your shopping list this year, Breath of the Wild is as must-buy as it gets.
Super Mario Odyssey
Nothing gets an old-school gamer feeling sentimental quite like a new Mario game, and Super Mario Odyssey is a good one. It’s so good, in fact, that it’s in the running for Game of the Year on most sites that hold video game awards. How do I know this? Super Mario Odyssey is in the running for Game of the Year in the TL;DR Games 12 Days of Game Awards.
Stardew Valley is an indie farming simulation game that released in 2016 for other platforms. It arrived on the Nintendo Switch in 2017, and my wife hasn’t stopped playing it since we picked it up. She’s played Stardew Valley on the PC and PS4, but the Nintendo Switch in its mobile form is her favorite. I don’t think it’s the best game on the Nintendo Switch, but it’s a good one.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 just arrived on the Nintendo Switch a few days ago, but all signs point to another masterpiece for Nintendo’s new console. An action role-playing game, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not a port from another system, but rather a game developed specifically for the Nintendo Switch. Watch the embedded trailer to learn more and scope out some gameplay.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim has come out on just about every platform imaginable since its initial release in 2011. I think there is an iteration on a cardboard box somewhere, honestly. The reason for that, though, is that it’s one of the best games to come out in the last 10 years, but has been skipped by many that don’t get into traditional consoles. Well, Skyrim on the Switch fixes that problem in short order.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Come on. You can’t have a list of the best games to come out on the Nintendo Switch without having a Mario Kart game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the first games to arrive on Nintendo’s new console, and it’s one of the best Nintendo Switch games. It’s Mario Kart and, yes, it can be played by two people. It also received some perfect scores from a few of the top gaming websites out there.
If you’re giving an award out for cute games, Splatoon 2 is likely going to win that. It is only on the Nintendo Switch, and it received good scores from most outlets. You control Inklings, and run around shooting ink at your foes. There is both a single-player and multiplayer, and it can be played by gamers of all ages, making it a must-buy for the family that loves the Nintendo Switch.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
You know that the Nintendo Switch is popular when publishers like Ubisoft want to get in on the action, which is exactly what happened with one of the best Nintendo Switch games of 2017, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. This turn-based tactical role-playing game is a must-have for any Mario fan and Nintendo Switch owner looking to fill out their library.
Not unlike Skyrim, Minecraft is on every platform there is. The number of parents I’ve talked to that tell me their kids are addicted to Minecraft is crazy. I sold an old PS4 to a friend because her kid had to be able to play Minecraft. If you own a Nintendo Switch, have kids, and go on family trips, Minecraft is a must-own simply because of the peace and quiet you’ll get on the road.
There are more good titles, but this is our list for the best Nintendo Switch games of 2017. If you have wide-ranging gaming needs, we have plenty of other best gaming lists to help you shop for yourself, or anyone on your list this holiday season.
